The journey to becoming a hotel wasn’t always intentional. Tandjung Sari began as the private home of its founder,
Wija Wawo-Runtu, in 1962. Soon extra bungalows were built to accommodate friends, then friends of friends. It became a hotel almost without anyone noticing it; but within a few years it was known around the world as the seminal boutique hotel of tropical Asia, welcoming guests like Adrian Zecha, Ingrid Bergman, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono, and Annie Lennox.
