Tembi is the Yogyakarta base for d'Omah, literally translated "at home" in the Javanese language. At home in Tembi takes the form of comfortable spacious accommodation in artistically restored, old Javanese houses with up to date facilities including airconditioning, swimming pools, internet connection, mini bars and international TV for those who want to keep in touch with the outside world. Each house has its central Pendopo or meeting area and an abundance of quiet corners for relaxing or enjoying intimate moments with your friends. Scattered throughout these homes are Javanese antiques combined with Indonesian contemporary art. The accommodation become an extension of the nearby art gallery - a unique combination of old and new Java. The service is charming and typically Javanese-friendly, non obtrusive and somewhat relaxed.
When the worlds financial crisis meant a reduction in demand for local crafted products for the home d’Omah took up the employment short fall that this created by developing 56 on-going micro finance projects to create local village entrepreneurs. d’Omah was formerly Warwick Purser’s family compound and has been featured in many magazines including Tatler. He still retains a residence on the hotel’s boundarys. Despite these new influences Tembi remains a traditional Javanese village with the early morning prayer call from the mosque, the sound of ducks and geese playing in the water and farmers harvesting the rice. It belonged to the estate of the former younger brother of the late Sultan of Yogyakarta. It operated as a hotel during the Great Depression and until the Japanese occupation began in 1942, After the second world war, it was used as the official residence of the Chinese consul before reverting to a hotel in 1951.
